Frequently asked questions
What is the Martingale betting system?
The Martingale is a progressive staking strategy where you double your stake after every losing bet, so a single eventual win recovers all prior losses plus one unit of profit. It originated in 18th-century France on even-money coin-toss and roulette wagers and takes its name from the French village of Martigues. It works best on near 50/50 sports outcomes priced close to -110. (Not to be confused with the unrelated 20th-century probability-theory concept of a 'martingale' stochastic process, formalized by Paul Lévy in 1934.)
How does the Martingale method work in sports betting?
Pick a near-coin-flip wager, place your base stake, and if it loses double the stake on the next qualifying bet. Keep doubling until one bet wins — recovering all prior losses plus a unit of profit — then reset to the base stake. At -110 odds with a $200 base stake, the sequence is $200 → $400 → $800 → $1,600 with a $3,000 bankroll requirement over 4 steps.
What is arbitrage betting?
Arbitrage betting (or "sure betting") is placing bets on every possible outcome of a sporting event across different sportsbooks such that the combined stakes can lock in a profit regardless of who wins — provided both legs are placed before the odds move. It works when the best available price on each side sums to an implied probability below 100%. In practice, arbitrage carries real execution risk: odds can move between the two bets, and sportsbooks may limit or restrict accounts suspected of arbitrage activity.
Is arbitrage betting legal?
Yes, arbitrage betting is legal in every US state where sports betting itself is legal. However, individual sportsbooks can limit or ban accounts they suspect of arbitrage — this is a private-contract issue between bettor and book, not a legal one.
